The performance of white clover in mixtures depends on various factors such as nitrogen fertilization, companion grass, and cutting frequency (see AN: 93-001853 and AN: 92-092189). The effects of temperature (15/20 and 20/25 degrees C day/night) and irradiance (184 and 395 mikromol/meter square s) on growth of two contrasting white clover types (var. hollandicum (Holl.) and var. giganteum (Gig.)) were examined in growth chambers. Stolon length and number of stolons were recorded every week, number of new leaves every two weeks. Leaf area per plant, above-ground biomass, below-ground biomass, nitrogen content, number and weight of nodules were measured at the end of the experiment (8 weeks). Seedlings were inocculated and grown in single pots filled with sand, fertilized with a nutrient solution without nitrogen. Number of stolons per plant was affected only by more light (13,8 vs 25,0) while lenght of three marked stolons was increased by more light (41%), higher temperatures (12%). Gig. had lower branching rates but longer stolons than Holl.. Above and below ground biomass was doubled by higher light irradiance with 19,5 and 3,9g/plant at the high light level, respectively. White clover type had no significant effect. Biomass and number of nodules increased with higher irradiance from 277 to 611 mg/plant and 1065 to 1444 per plant, respectively. Above ground nitrogen yield was enhanced by 100%, below ground by 300% with higher rates of irradiance.
