Resistance of cotton cultivars to thrips, Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood.

Out of nine cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) cultivars grown in four repeats at Gujrat (Pakistan) during 1990, NIAB78 was found as the most resistant to thrips (Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood) attack. Leaf mid-rib diameter, moisture contents and total sugars were found positively while number of nectaries per leaf, hair density on mid-rib, leaf area, crude proteins, crude fats, total ashes and crude fibre contents of leaf were negatively correlated to the mean population of thrips per leaf. Density of gossypol glands on leaf lamina and mid-rib, hair density on leaf lamina and leaf lamina thickness had no role in imparting resistance in cotton to thrips.
