Tamano de semillas de frijol variedad jamapa y su relacion con la densidad de siembra en la costa de Nayarit.

In the state of Nayarit bean cultivation is of great importance by reason of the large area devoted to this crop and its significant role in nationwide bean production. Having observed differences in seed size of the Jamapa variety, which is the most widely used material in this region, it was identified the need to determine its range of variation, with the aim of suggesting the number of kilograms of seed needed per unit of land. Farmers are currently using between 35 and 40 kilograms per hectare, but this amount produces low population density and affects yield. The study was done during 1982 and 1983 in the Santiago Ixcuintla Agricultural Experimental Station with the collaboration of the Mexican National Seed Production Company.(PRONASE). Samples were taken of the total production of the Jamapa variety of beans harvested during these two cycles. The results indicate that: a)variations in seed size occurred both during and between cycles where the number of seeds per 100 grams was 474+-36, b)the size variation affects the number of kilograms to be used in planting and population density. Therefore, it is advisable select the seed by size, c)it was corroborated that the number of kilograms used by farmers produces low population densities.
