The relation between inorganic nitrogen content in soil and intensity of nitrogen fertilization with regard to crop yield and quality of tobacco variety Virginia V-6 was studied in three-year trials. Close relations among concentration of inorganic nitrogen in soil, nitrogen doses and quality of tobacco leaves were observed. The optimal nitrogen fertilizer dose at the soil nitrogen content of 18 - 30 mg N.kg-1 up to the depth 0.6 m was 40 kg.ha-1. Inorganic nitrogen content in soil in phase of flowering and heading of tobacco positively correlates above all with the contents of total nitrogen, protein, nicotine, leaf yield and negatively with production costs.
