Variability of morphological characters in the progeny (R2) of somatic hybrid between Nicotiana sylvestris and Nicotiana plumbaginifolia.

Plant type, leaf shape, corolla length, sepal length, and anther shape in the R2 progeny were intermediate as in the R1 somatic hybrids. Fertility based on seed set capsules per plant was improved by 40% in the R2 plants compared with that of R1 somatic hybrids. Germination rate in the R2 plants exceeded both parental values. Chlorophyll and sugar contents of the leaves in the R2 plants were mid-parental values, and number of chloroplasts in the guard cells of the R2 progeny was almost equal to the sum of chloroplast numbers from both parents.
