Rattan species distribution in four provinces of the Philippines.

One-hundred percent inventory was conducted in ten 4-ha blocks, with rattan stands, located in the forests of Palawan, Laguna, Agusan del Sur, and Davao del Norte [Philippines]. The survey was done to determine the extent and distribution of the various rattan species existing in their natural habitat. A total of 27 species were found in the survey areas, six of which were identified to be commercially utilized. Results show that the total number of mature plants per hectare (127 to 281 plants per hectare) was only four to 16% of all rattan plants, as against 84 to 96% of wildlings (786 to 2,799 wildlings per hectare). Limuran (Calamus ornatus Schultz car, philippinensis), a commercial species, accounted for 1,689 lineal meters per hectare which was more or less 50% of the growing stock in the areas surveyed. On the average, the total effective time involved in establishment and tallying was 56.22 crew-hours per block.
