Structure of the arable layer of chernozem formed from loess affected with compaction by tractor wheels.

Cracks in regular, vertical arrangement, mostly 30-150 microns wide, were found to occur in the surface layer of soil subjected to direct compaction. Below the surface zone soil compaction increases so strongly that pores larger than 20 microns do not appear at all.
