Efficacy of oxfendazole against Stephanurus dentatus in naturally infected backyard raised pigs [Philippines].

Sixteen naturally infected backyard pigs were used to determine the efficacy of oxfendazole against the swine kidney-worm Stephanurus dentatus. Eight pigs were treated using oxfendazole swine premix 6.75% at the manufacturer's recommended dose rate of 4.5 mg/kg bodyweight. Eight pigs served as controls. A sudden drop in urine egg counts on the first day post-treatment was observed among treated pigs while urine egg counts of control pigs remained high. Eggs disappeared in the urine of all treated pigs completely on the 14th day post-treatment. No live kidneyworm was recovered from treated pigs on necrospy while a total of 86 live adult kidneyworms were recovered from control pigs. Based on the results obtained, it can be concluded that oxfendazole, given at 4.5 mg/kg bodyweight is 100% effective against mature S. dentatus.
