The grasses (bromegrass, timothy) and their mixtures with lucerne or red clover were dried traditionally on swath or artificially dried with ventilators as well as they were ensiled as fresh green forage without any additions or with 0.3 percent of formaldehyde. The both conserving methods resulted in the rise of the content of light soluble nitrogen compounds. The soluble N concentration in hays was some lower than in silages. No effect of formaldehyde addition by ensiling on the protein content and quality of silages was stated. The silages of higher quality were obtained by ensiling the dried forages.
