Notoedric mange in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus). Short communication.

Skin scrapings were obtained from the affected regions of guinea pigs and permanent mounts of mites were made with Hoyer's medium. On microscopic examination, all the stages of mites viz. egg, larva, nymph and adults were found and identified as Notoedres cati (Hering) (caniculi (Geralch)) based on the descriptions of Yunker (1973). The body measurements of mites on an average were 233 microm. x 190 microm. in female and 160 microm. x 126 microm. in male. The anal opening was dorsal in both sexes situated at the level of the IV pair of legs - a typical character of the genus Notoedres. The dorsum was finely striated, wide and triangular shaped denticulations were present in the anterior region which become smaller and diminished posteriorly.
