Physiological characterization of varietal resistance to sheath blight of rice.

Varietal differences and dynamics of total carbohydrates, sugars, starch, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, wax, and silica in rice sheaths and leaves at booting stage and 10 days after flowering (10 DAF) were analyzed from 7 rice cultivars/lines in relation to sheath blight development. Starch and sugar contents were highly significant in susceptible than in resistant cultivars. Varietal differences of the other chemicals analyzed were not significant. The negative correlation between the content of the starch, sugars and total carbohydrates in the leaves and sheaths and cultivar differences in damage measured as the percentage of leaf and sheath areas infected was statistically significant. On the other hand, phosphorus content in the leaves and sheath was positively correlated with the damage levels of different cultivars. Sheath silicon contents was positively correlated with sheath blight. The results strongly indicate a close association between increased susceptibility and the carbohydrate balance/dynamics between vegetative parts and reproductive parts at critical periods of the disease progress.
