This paper sets forth a model of the process by which speciality crop diversification occurs. It elaborates on those factors and forces that initiate, accelerate or detract from speciality crop diversification process. In particular, small producers will be the least likely to initiate the diversification process. It will be initiated by larger firms who have, or can acquire, the management skills necessary and who have the dept of resources to withstand the risks associated with non-traditional crop ventures. These larger firms initiating the diversification process may be local or domestic firms. Government efforts to accelerate the diversification process typically attempt to assist by adding to the infrastructure necessary for crop diversification. Also, government efforts are typically directed toward the provision of information through providing market intelligence, production technology and expected cost and return information.
