Mulching has already been proved to be useful and essential in designing landscape, urban horticulture and general planting. It was confirmed that under the Moscow district climate conditions wood chips mulch (ground tree trimmings) acted as an undersoil screen decreasing weather variations of soil temperature and moisture. The level of temperature change varied with the time of the year, with mulched plot having a lag in reaching the temperature of the check plot. The mulch had a stabilisation effect on the soil temperature. It was shown that wood chips not only conserved soil moisture, moderated the soil temperature, but also had a tendency to increase the content of carbon dioxide in plants root zone of the mulched soil. That increase was determined by the higher level of biological activity of the mulched soil.
