Biological control of aphids on potatoes by inundative releases of predators.

Small field-plot trials were carried out to mass-release eggs of the brown lacewing, Micromus tasmaniae Walker (Neuroptera: Hemerobiidae), every 3-4 days begining after the onset of aphid migration into the potato crops. Eggs were sprayed using a specially designed compressed-air sprayer with a cone nozzle at 206 kPa Pressure. Numbers of wingless Myzus persicae Sulzer samples at weekly intervals. The results showed a reduction of 70% in the peak number of aphids in the sprayed plots. The yield of fresh tubers in the control (Unsprayed) plots was also reduced by 40%. The feasability of periodic inundative releases of the predator eggs in the commercial potato fields in discussed.
