This study was conducted in the horse race track of Concepcion, Chile, from October 1991 until February, 1992 to evaluate clinic prevalence and incidence of lameness in 200 thoroughbred horses. Prevalence of lameness was 35,55%, with a total number of 71 horses in the sample. Injuries were more prevalent in horses older than 7 years. According the weight of the animals, the higher incidence of injuries occurred in horses within the range from 350 to 400 kg. According to withers height, the higher incidence occurred in horses between 1.56 m and 1.60 (43.01%). In relation to sex, injuries were markedly more frequent in males, specially in horse castrated (44.04%). In relation with anatomic region, the highest prevalence was for fetlock (44%), shank, hoof and carpus (17.33%, 16% and 12%) and finally tendons injuries (10.66%). The number of horses presenting more than one type of lameness was four. It was concluded that age was an important factor in occurrence of lameness, with a higher risk for older ages. Additionally, incidence of injuries was inversely proportional to live weight of horses.
