Nitrogen fertilization in the form of ammonium nitrate at the rates of 100, 200 and 300 kg N per hectare was applied to winter rape and maize as forecrops of winter wheat and to sugar beets as a forecrop of spring barley. The yield increment of wheat under fertilization effect in relation to control treatment varied from 0.32 to 1.25 t per hectare and that of barley - from 0.22 to 0.70 t respectively depending on fertilizer rate and forecrop kind. An intensive nitrogen fertilization of the forecrop led to an increase of the crude protein content in the wheat grain by 0.36 - 1.59% and in barley grain - by 0.22 - 0.9%.
