In field and phytotron experiments, studies were made on the weed control efficacy and selectivity of acetochlor, butylate and sulcotrione (2-(2-chloro-4-mesylbensoyl) cyclohexane-1,3-dione)) to maize hybrids, inbred lines and sweetcorn. The average-growth inhibiton in the phytotron experiment for inbred lines was 54% for acetochlor (23% with antidote) and 12% for butylate (8% with antidote). All the maize hybrids, inbred lines and sweetcorn hybrids tested were tolerant of sulcotrione up to a rate of 900 g. a.i. ha(-1), when applied at the optimum time (in the 4-6 leaf stage of maize). Mild phytotoxic symptoms were only observed for the sulcotrione + pyridate combination in a few sweetcorns, inbred lines and early maturing hybrids when the rate of pyridate exceeded 1.3 l ha(-1).
