Several factors related to the growth and survival of Agrobacterium rhizogenes, the pathogen of hairy root of melon, in media and soils were examined. The bacteria grew in the temperature range of 9 - 43 degrees C, and in the pH range of 5 - 9 in beef extract peptone medium. Thermal death point was 54 degrees C. The bacteria added to sterilized soil with a water content of 40 - 100% of the maximum water-holding capacity, rapidly grew. On the other hand, the number of bacteria added to non-sterilized soil slowly decreased. The bacteria survived for more than 250 days at 30 degrees C in naturally infested soil. It is suggested that naturally infested soil may become one of the major infection sources of the disease.
