Chlorothalonil fungicide: a new molluscicide for the control of golden snails (Pomacea sp.) in lowland rice.

A collaborative work between the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) and ALDIZ, Inc. [Philippines] was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of chlorothalonil fungicide (trade name - Rover 500) for the control of golden snails in lowland rice. The study was conducted at the rice experiment farm of USMARC, USM, Kabacan, Cotabato [Philippines] from Nov 1 to Dec 15, 1995. Chlorotalonil fungicide, in its flowable form, was found to have very good molluscicidal activity. Best results were obtained when it was applied during a hot sunny day either one day before transplanting or immediately after transplanting. Effective application rate ranged from 0.48 to 0.72 kg ai/ha at 192 li water/ha or 80 to 120 ml/16 li water. Chlorothalonil is capable of killing snails from 26.66 to 63.33 percent during the first six hours after treatment. Mortality rate increased to 60-96.66 percent after 24 hours and 83.33-100 percent, 48 hours after treatment. Compared to niclosamide (Bayluscide 250 EC) which is quick-acting (86.66-98.66 percent snail mortality during the first 24 hour), chlorothalonil has a gradual killing effect on snails. But, such gradual killing effect is compensated by chlorothalonil's initial antifeedant effect on snails thereby preventing damage on rice seedlings.
