In addition to its industrial use for oil production, the babassu palm which grows in extensive stand in North Central Brazil, is of great importance for the subsistence agriculture in this region. It is a source of cash income and provides the smallholders with a number of important products. On the one hand, there are attempts to make better use of the potential of babassu nuts through an integrated industrial utilization, whilst on the other hand, large areas of babassu forests are cleared to plant cash crops or establish pastures. Both these developments radically affect the rural population in the babassu region.
