It has been pointed out that some bicarboxylic acids, such as gallic or iso and terephtalic acids, sensibly increase the shrinkage temperature value of leathers tanned with aluminium-citrate complex salts in the presence of reduced chrome aliquots, unlike others which, such as ellagic, succinic and adipic acids, induce a real detanning action in the substrate with consequent drop of the thermal stability. The further reticulation, observed in the first two cases, depends on the concurrence of three factors: presence of an aromatic nucleus, relatively low molecular weight and reactive functions (hydroxylic and carboxylic groups) in meta and para position between them. The absence of only one of these conditions produces such a lack of balance that the above effect becomes null or quite negative.
