Can dietary selenium modify cancer risk?

Combs G.F. Jr. | Clark L.C.
Geographical studies of selenium status and cancer incidence indicate an inverse relationship between selenium status and cancer mortality. This article examines studies relevant to this inverse correlation, as well as studies on rats in which high-level selenium treatments reduced tumor incidence. In case-control and cohort studies, low selenium status is associated with increased cancer risk. Results of selenium-intervention studies now in progress should indicate whether improving selenium status can decrease cancer risk in humans.(jd-b).
