The effect of two weight reduction maintenance strategies for moderately/mildly retarded adults.

A study of 13 trainable, overweight, mentally retarded adults who had completed a 12-week behavioral therapy weight reduction program followed by a 10-month post-program weight monitoring period, randomly assigned 7 subjects to a 12-month maintenance booster session group and 6 subjects to a control post-treatment group. Weight loss continued in all adults during the 10-month post-program weight monitoring period; however, during the 12-month period thereafter, the maintenance booster group continued to lose weight, while the control group only maintained their weight loss. Twelve months after this 12-month period, a follow-up weighing indicated that the long-term success of the 12-month booster session was not maintained.
