Confused: farmers' perspective on the adoption of integrated pest management (IPM).

Based on the feedback from farmers in Isabela, Tarlac, Laguna, Iloilo and Cotabato [Philippines] from 1986 to the present, it can be seen that the transfer of technology of IPM is more ideal than real. This paper attempts to discern the farmers' perspective(s) by examining their words in relation to their deeds and placing both in the context of the extension of IPM through the authors' Integrated Nutrient and Pest Management Extension and Women (INPM) Project. The major finding is that the farmer's perspective seems to arise, in general, from a confusion on the part of the farmer on the nature of IPM and on his farming system's environmental and financial sustainability. The experts themselves are plagued by conscious or unconscious misconceptions on the nature, principles and philosophy of IPM.
