Use of line-source sprinkler irrigation system in examining the effects of intermittent rainfall on establishment and early growth of dry-seeded rainfed lowland rice.

One problem in conducting water deficit field experiments is how to accurately vary the frequency and intensity of rainfall relative to crop growth stage. This paper examines the use of a line-source sprinkler irrigation system during the dry season to vary rainfall frequency and intensity, and to quantify relationships between rainfall parameters and establishment and early growth of dry-seeded rice. Impact sprinkler were used to vary frequency and intensity of rainfall, to obtain 6 rainfall distributions of decreasing magnitude: 1.) thrice weekly 30 mm rainfall, 2.) daily 10 mm rainfall, 3.) thrice weekly 10 mm rainfall, 4.) weekly 30 mm rainfall, 5.) biweekly 30 mm rainfall, and 6.) weekly 10 mm rainfall. Rice growth increased as rainfall distribution increased based on growth parameters measured (leaf area index, stem and leaf dry weights, total dry matter). These findings proved the effectiveness of the system in simulating rainfall.
