The Seed Health Unit of IRRI [International Rice Research Inst., Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] was organized in Dec 1982 in cooperation with the Philippine Plant Quarantine Service (PQS) to handle the phytosanitary certification and post-entry quarantine clearance of rice seeds only. Rice seeds are certified following the rules and regulation of the PQS and those of the importing country, and are reported to the Chief of the PQS every month. The present facility was designed to handle more than 5,000 samples a year and rice seeds are subjected to the required steps of seed inspection, routine seed health test and seed treatment. Crop health inspection is done on all incoming seeds as part of the post-entry requirement and a site was designated in the research center for such purpose. An average of 50 seed shipments with about 6,000 entries are received each year. About 700 phytosanitary certificates are issued each year covering more than 150,000 rice seed pockets which are sent to about 70 countries.
