Prospects in the use of the entomopathogenous fungus Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. (Deuteromycetes: Hyphomycetes) to control the spruce bark beetle Ips typographus L. (Coleoptera: Scolytidae).

Current control methods against Ips typographus include sanitary thinning and pheromone mass-trapping. A new approach to the problem could be to focus the control on a developmental stage and habitat of the pest which have been neglected untill now, using a fungal pathogen. The aim of the present paper is to examine the suitability of Beauveria bassiana as a microbiocontrol agent against Ips typographus adults overwintering in forest litter. We showed that, in laboratory conditions, fungal pathogenicity is maintained at low temperature (12 degrees C), which is favorable to fungal activity during winter. Also, persistance of the fungal spores during winter in the forest litter appeared to be excellent. However, since Beauveria bassiana is not very specific, impact on other arthropods in the litter should be studied before any large scale field application.
