Volatile components of Canada thistle [(Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop.] roots were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Among 24 compounds identified, there were seven C13 polyacetylenes, seven unsaturated C15-C17 straight-chain hydrocarbons, and five epoxides derived from the C16 and C17 hydrocarbons. The major components are cis-8,9-epoxyheptadeca-1,11,14-triene and 8,9-dihydroxyheptadeca-1,11,14-triene. Sesquiterpenes gamma-humulene and beta-selinene are present. Compounds obtained from germinating thistle seed were inspected for C13 polyacetylene content and ability to stimulate germination of teliospores of the Canada thistle rust organism Puccinia punctiformis. As development of C13 polyacetylenes in the seedlings increased, so also did spore germination activity, and these compounds seem responsible for this activity.
