An investigation was conducted on rice plants that are grown along the edge area of the main road between Medan and Pematang Siantar, North Sumatra. The aim of this research is to evaluate concentration levels of for heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Pb and Co) contained in the rice grains to plants grown in the area. Four samples of rice were taken each of four study location. Results of the analysis showed that the grains contained average concentration of these elements to be : Pb 26.75-36.50 mg per kg, Zn 21.75-27.75 mg per kg, Co 0.5 to 3.0 mg per kg [one location only] Cu no detected results. From these results, it is concluded that rice grown in these location has been evently polluted by Pb and Zn, whereas Co appeared in one location only. No Cu pollution was detected within the study locations.
