Study of the operations of solanaceous crop [tomato; eggplant] growers and traders in Quezon Province [Philippines].

This study presents an analysis of the current processes in production and marketing of solanaceous crops in Quezon province [Philippines]. Results showed that of the vegetables harvested, 48 percent were consumed; the rest went to Batangas, Laguna and Metro Manila [Philippines]. Average price per kilogram was P1.49 in Quezon and P3.22 in other provinces. Wholesalers got majority of the farmers' produce at P0.94 for tomato and P3.16 for eggplant. Four market outlets were involved in the distribution of tomato and eggplant. Each outlet had direct contact with farmers. On the other hand, market flow involved seven market linkages. Majority of the farmers and traders were aware of the prevailing market prices. Common problems in vegetable production were pests and diseases, high cost of labor and material inputs, bad weather, and technology. In marketing, farmers cited low prices particularly for crops in season. Traders constraints included procurement and quality control.
