Effect of whey supplementation in feed of broiler chicks challenged with Salmonella gallinarum.

This experiment was conducted to study the effect of supplementing broiler feed with different levels of whey on reducing the inhibitory effect of S. gallinarum. 240 days old chicks were randomly distributed into six groups, each with two replicates of twenty chicks. The whey was mixed with water at rates of 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%. The solutions produced were than added to basal diet in a rate of 100 ml/kg diet to provide five groups. The sixth group (control) received the basal diet free of any additives. All groups, except the control, were challenged orally on day 3 of age with 10** (6) cfu of S. gallinarum. The duration of the experiment was seven weeks. There was a significant (p<0.05) improvement in body weight, body weight gain and feed conversion ratio in the groups which received whey and were challenged with S. gallinarum compared to the group that did not, but challenged with S. gallinarum, in addition of supplementing the feed with whey, reduced the inhibitory effect of S. gallinarum noticed by a significant (p<0.01) reduction in mortality rate. The reduction in mortality rate and inhibitory effects of S. gallinarum were increased with the increased rate of whey supplementation. The number of S. gallinarum "Log sub (10)" cfu/gn of cecal contents was significantly reduced in chicks that received whey. Results indicate that whey effectively reduced S. gallinarum colonization in broiler chicks and decreased fecal transmission of S. gallinarum.
