The history of the development of experimental design in agricultural research since Fisher's revolutionary papers is reviewed and the philosophy of the modern approach to experimentation is developed. A number of approaches such as randomized blocks, Papadakis' nearest neighbour methods, non-orthogonal designs and partitions are discussed. The importance of extensive research in experimental design is stressed for tropical environments where forecasting fertility patterns in soil is difficult.
