The paper is dealing with differentiated management of forests (especially of beech stands) in Slovakia since the oldest times until now. Development of differentiated forest management is briefly analyzed under normal ecological conditions. Special attention is also paid to differentiated management of forests under the current variable ecological conditions resulting from air pollution synergism. The target of forest management in the areas with air pollution is particularly to increase their longevity. Systematic research into silvicultural and productivity problems in beech stands affected by air pollution is just beginning. That is why the present knowledge of these urgent problems is very recent in Slovakia for the time being. Outlooks of differentiated forest management in Slovakia are suggested for the fields of research, science, education and forest operations.
