In two separate feeding trials with rearing piglets the influence of graded levels of 00 rapeseed meal (RSM) from 5 to 15 % was investigated and the effect of a steam- and heat-treated 00 rapeseed presscake (RSP) was compared to untreated RSP and RSM at an inclusion rate in the diet of 10 %. The addition of 8 % RSM in pregnancy and lactation feeds was tested on rearing sows in two reproduction cycles. The results can be summarised as follows: growth rate and feed conversion ratio were impaired at the 15 % 00 RSM level. An upper feeding limit of 10 % is therefore recommended. Heat and steam treatment of 00 RSP improved palatability as well as feed intake and growth rate as compared with untreated 00 RSM and RSP. Glucosinolate content was lowered by an additional 50 %. At a feeding level of 10 %, untreated 00 RSP and RSM did not differ with respect to performance. Rearing sows showed no reduction in fertility with the addition of 8 % 00 RSM. In 1995 the glucosinolate content of rapeseed by-products was on average 14.2 mmol/kg in Switzerland. On the basis of an upper limit of 2 mmol/kg in complete feed, the corresponding supplementing limits are given.
