This article analyses the development of the unemployment in Latvia, as well as the socio-demographic characteristics of the unemployed. The principal problems which exist in the labour market are emphasized: large quantitative, qualitative and territorial discrepancies between supply and demand, as well as a discrepancy between the registered unemployment rate and the actual rate. A State Labour Service has been created to study unemployment patterns and to retrain the unemployed.
