Grain-forage legume intercropping combinations for fodder and grain production [Philippines].

Two field trials were conducted at IRRI [International Rice Research Institute, Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] under upland and lowland conditions to identify promising corn/sorghum-forage legume combinations in terms of grain and fodder yields and persistence of legumes during the 1984-85 dry season. Upland was planted in October and lowland in December. In lowland, corn yielded 0.46 t/ha vs 2.18 t/ha for sorghum; both grain yields were not affected by any legume intercrop. Siratro yielded 3.4 t/ha DM [dry matter] fodder yield with 0.53 t corn stover. Siratro was 2.83 t/ha DM plus 3.32 t sorghum stover giving the highest biomass total yield of 0.15 t excluding grain. Schofield stylo yielding 2.13 and 1.53 t/ha DM with corn and sorghum. Cowpea yielded 0.57 t/ha DM straw with corn or sorghum plus cowpea dry grain of 0.038 and 0.067 t/ha, respectively. In upland, grain yield of sorghum was significantly reduced from 6.27 to 3.67 t/ha with siratro and 3.37 t/ha with siratro and 3.73 t/ha with cowpea. Corn yield was not affected by any of the intercrops averaging 6.33 t/ha. Cowpea grain yield was 0.30 and 0.77 t/ha, added to its stover of 0.87 and 1.27 t/ha DM, with corn and sorghum, respectively. Siratro gave highest fodder yield of 7.83 t/ha DM added to 5.07 t corn stover. This was similar to 8.10 t/ha siratro + 3.90 t/ha sorghum stover although the latter was significantly reduced (P<.05) from 8.03 t/ha as sole crop. Schofield stylo yielded 3.23 and 2.10 t/ha DM with corn and sorghum; centrosema 1.43 and 0.90 t/ha, respectively.
