In recent decades there has been a substantial rise in the number of grape varieties included in clone selection. In addition to Hungarian varieties, large batches of propagation material from 31 European and stock clones have been introduced. These have been used to plant 988 hectares of vineyards. There has also been an increase in the number of clones introduced into production within each variety. At present, almost 500 hectares of vine lines are available from 16 state registeres clones and 31 valuable experimentals. The quantity of rooted propagation material from clones and clone-type lines has also increased to about 40 o/o, but this is still not enough. The main types of products were produced largely or entirely from propagation material of clone value. Nowadays, in certain wine-growing areas, it is possible to set up variety experiments on as much as 1 ha of land to determine which of several clones of any variety is the most valuable at the given site. Details are given on the conditions required for successful clone selection and on a 3-stage clone selection method, after which clone-type selection is discussed, as a successful, specifically Hungarian selection method. The drastic situation of Hungarian grape production cannot be solved by the use of clones alone; it is essential to continue the variety change at a faster rate, and to multiply and utilize guaranteed virus-free propagation stock on a farm scale.
