Residual efficiency of applied N, P, and K fertilizers in selected soil types of Benguet Province [Philippines].

Pot experiments were conducted at the NPRCRTC-BSU, La Trinidad, Benguet [Philippines] to assess the residual efficiency of N, P, and K fertilizers applied in selected soil types with low fertility. White potato was used as the first crop and corn as the second crop. Residual efficiency of N fertilizer ranged from 3 to 51 percent, 38 to 63 percent and 29 to 61 percent for Buyagan clay loam, Tacdian loam and Ambassador silt loam soils, respectively. For the three soils used, residual efficiency decreased as N fertilizer was increased to 280 kg/ha. Nitrogen application at a rate of 70 kg/ha enhanced highest residual efficiency. Phosphorus fertilizer applied in these soils had very low residual efficiency of 0-12 percent suggesting high P sorption. Varying response was observed in Buyagan clay loam and Ambassador silt loam soils with a decrease in Buyagan clay loam as the P fertilizer level was increased whereas for Ambassador silt loam, it increased from 4 to 12 percent as P2O5 application was increased from 70 to 280 kg/ha. Residual efficiency of K fertilizer ranged from 6 to 107 percent. For Buyagan clay loam and Km 18 clay loam soils, residual efficiency decreased in K2O fertilizer rates higher than 70 kg/ha. For Ambassador silt loam, residual efficiency increased with an increased in K fertilization up to 280 kg K2O/ha.
