During studies made on Booroola Merino it could be stated that the excelling prolificacy is due to the greatly efficient "F" gene which is transmitted monofactorially. When introducing this gene into other breeds, it is possible to increase the fertility rate to such an extent which can be reached but in 20-30 years with inside breeding selection. The "F" gene expresses its effect exclusively in females. It multiplies the number of ova becoming detached simultaneously (ovulation rate) and thus it gives a greater litter number. Its introduction into the Hungarian Merino population resulted in litter numbers 1,8-2,0. The utilization of the "F" gene in the domestic breeding programs requires that a homozygote Booroola nucleus stock must be developed and a heterozygote prolific maternal populations be built up by crossbreeding its rams with the local breeds. When this population is crossbred with and extreme meat-type terminal breeds, then lambs of good quality and with great growth vigor can finally be produced. Depending on the breed of the terminal rams, it is possible to produce a living mass by 14-17 o/o greater with one ewe. Investigations concerning localization of the "F" gene are continuing.
