There are several felidae among the numerous endangered species. Means of aiding their survival include the reintroduction of wild animals bred in captivity or their relocation from densely populated to scarcely populated areas. It appears that the dangers of such reintroduction or relocation schemes have not been sufficiently examined with regard to the risk of viral infections confronting individuals kept in zoos or similar situations. This report presents three examples (reintroduction of zoo-bred snow leopards infected with FIV, FIP infection of European wild cats bred in captivity, relocation of lions from East Africa) to illustrate that accidental viral infections are to be expected when relocating or reintroducing wild cats.
