The changes in the number of cows on cattle breeding farms in Latvia including private peasant farms, collective farms and large complexes in the period of 1950-1996 are presented. The adequate size and structure (planning) of barns required for the latest cattle breeding technology due to the general trend to specialization and concentration of production in the world are discussed. The barn systems of feed distribution, manure disposal, milking and milk cooling in the most developed European countries depending on the number of cows are shown graphically.
