Development of gene transfer technology allows the introduction of well defined genes into germ lines of animals. These genes may be integrated and expressed in animal cells, thus conferring new biological functions on transgenic animals. Transgenesis can be also applied to enhance genetic improvement of domestic animals. Thus, despite of many technical problems and enormous costs, the transgenic technology holds the promise of provoding new methodology of genetic improvement of livestock.
