The intensively reared pig is exposed to constrictions and restrictions which modify its normal behaviour up to cause stresses non compatible with productive efficiency and/or health status. Moreover, the stress is also to be considered as a predisposing factor mainly as regards infectious diseases. In this context increasing interest is assumed by the study of both abnormal behaviour of animals and compatibility between their comfort and farm profitability. At present the available knowledges are scanty and incomplete to face up the problem altogether. The interactions between animals and environment could be improved through adjusting the rearing technology to minimal comfort requirements or by reducing animal sensitivity to unfavourable environmental conditions. The latter strategy may be pursued by several ways such as: drug administration (namely neuroleptics); selection of pig clones less sensitive to the constrictions of intensive rearing. The development of studies on applied ethology shows that welfare of domestic animals is assuming an increasing weight to which must be added the political involvements deriving from European regulations.
