It was found that high doses of nitrogen had decreased dry matter and sugar contents of sugar beet roots, and caused an increase of total nitrogen and nitrates in their leaves. The content of protein and K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe was also enhanced. The nitrate levels did not exceed those considered toxic to animals. Sprinkling irrigation had decrease the content of nitrates in the crop, but modified its chemical composition to a lesser extent than the nitrogen fertilization. The increased concentration of K and Na in sugar beets, which had been fertilized with high doses of nitrogen, had been diminishing the technological value of the crop.
