Laffers et al. (1988) and Paule et al. (1988) provide basic theoretical information and describe steps necessary for the preservation of the largest amount possible of genetic diversity of forest trees via the establishment of genetic reserves. Forty-four forest gene reserves with a total area of 12,673 ha exist on the territory of Slovakia at present. The total reduced area of main tree species represents 8,556 ha of the total: Norway spruce - 3,154.46 ha, silver fir - 1,104.74 ha, Scots pine - 770.88 ha, European larch - 341.91 ha, common beech - 1,819.74 ha, sessile oak - 1,384.19 ha. Silver fir occurs in twenty gene reserves. Thirteen of them (amounting to 3,352 ha) with 1,105 ha of the silver fir match the criteria for the gene reserve of this species. Regarding the actual state of forests in Slovakia, of the initial intention of the authors to declare sixty-one forest gene reserves with an area of appr. 41,000 ha, only about sixty seem to be realizable.
