The present work was undertaken in order to characterize the effects of oxytocin on uterine and cardiovascular activities of adult goats during oestrogenic and progestational phases of oestrus cycle. In addition, the muscle relaxative effect of clenbuterol, nifedipine and papaverine on uterine and cardiovascular activities in oxytocin treated goats was evaluated. Under epidural and general anaesthesia the femoral artery and vein were catheterized, and a balloon type intrauterine catheter was inserted in a uterine horn through lapharatomy. Arterial blood pressure (BP) heart rate (HR) and uterine activity (UA) were recorded by liquid pressure transducers connected to a Gilson polygraph. Oxytocin (4-40-400 mUI/kg) induced a dose dependent increase in myometric activity. That was more intense during the oestrogenic phase of cycle. These changes were associated with modification in frequency and intensity of uterine contractions. Pretreatment with clenbuterol (4 ug/kr), papaverine (5 mg/kg) and nifedipine (80 ug/kg) blocked the oxytocin induced uterine activity increase in goats. Oxytocin was not effective in modifying the BP or HR in both phases of oestrous cycle. Clenbuterol pretreatment (4 ug/kg) increased HR but did not modify the BP. Papaverine (5 mg/kg) decreased BP and HR. Pretreatment with nifedipine increased HR but did not modify the arterial blood pressure of goats.
