Contrary to the higher plants and a part of the lower plants little attention has been given to the algae, lichens, fungi and the bacteria. For the identification of these groups special aids and specialists are needed. also the complex and season related life cycle of namely the fungi further complicates the identification. The economic value of these groups for Suriname is discussed extensively. The economic importance of the algae and the fungi as a food source for different organisms, their medicinal and ritual use, their use in agriculture and biotechnologie and their industrial value are extensively discussed. The aspects of legislation and prospecting are also briefly discussed. Finally some recommendation and strategies are given.
