Analysis of some chemical and physical properties of water of the Lamtakong watershed revealed the following: pH, 6.8-8.85; water temperature, 20.5-31 deg C.; dissolved oxygen, 3.1-9.8 mg/l; and biochemical oxygen demand, 0.25-3.1 mg/l. Results of bacteriological test of the water were as follows: total viable counts of aerobic heterotrophic bacteria at 35 deg C. for 48 hours were 1.03x10 to the 3 power-2.63x10 to the 5 power cells/ml; total coliform bacteria were 0.7x10 to the 2 power->2.40x10 to the 3 power MPN/100 ml; fecal coliform bacteria were 0.72x10->2.40x10 to the 3 power MPN/100 ml; fecal streptococci were <2-1.72x10 to the 2 power MPN/100 ml; FC:FS ratio were 146.48 and E. coli were <2-2.40x10 to the 3 power MPN/100 ml. Bacteria isolated from water samples were identified into 22 genera, most of which belonged to genera Bacillus, Flavobacterium, Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter. The results indicated that seasonal change, the amount of rainfall and nature of the area had a great effect on bacteriological quality of the water. In the early part of the rainy season, the number of bacterial parameters of steam water were greater than during other seasons because the water flow of soil surface brought organic matters, nutrients and microorganisms from the soil surface into the stream water. Findings from the study showed that water of the Lamtakong river was unsuited for direct drinking unless it was pretreated to reduce the bacterial population.
