The effect of light on the development of sorghum downy mildew and its causal organism, Peronosclerospora sorghi (Weston and Uppal) C.G. Shaw, was studied. Light affected all processes studied except for the germination of conidia. Less than one-half (40%) of the number of conidia is produced from leaves of systemically diseased grown plants in 50% of full day light condition. A short (4 minutes) interruption of the normally required 8 hours dark incubation period with light at the mid point result in a great reduction (83%) of conidia produced. A reduction (60%) in normal sunlight intensity result in both a faster rate and more systemic (203%) diseased development. The carbohydrate content of corn leaves, including an exogenous source, has a direct positive relationship on the quantity of conidia that are produced from diseased leaves which are chlorotic and therefore are lower in carbohydrate than leaves of non-diseased plants as measured by total reducing sugar.
