Enhanced grain yield potentials in rice by increasing the number of high density grains [Philippines].

Results of experiments indicate that cultivars have different degrees of grain filling or density of the grains. The grains were graded by specific gravity method. Weight of single grains can greatly vary. High density or quality grains, those that submerge at 1.20 specific gravity, have greater kernel volume and weight and also higher head rice yield. Varietal differences exist in the number of quality grains. Potential yield is based on average weight of a single grain. This should be based on weight of the quality or high density grain. This suggests that increasing the proportion of quality grains would enhance potential yield. The yield of quality grain in IR8 was estimated to be 30% of the potential yield. An estimated 24% of increase in grain yield is possible by increasing the number of quality grains. N application had no effect on the number of quality grains. Assessment of five crosses showed that in four crosses F1 progenies had higher quality grains than the better parents indicating that the character is heritable and heterotic. Quality grain index is a ratio of the proportion of quality grain to the total number of spikelets produced. It can serve as an effective tool for developing high yield potential plants.
